About Thierry Gourjon Visuals

Fascinated at an early age by the photographic medium and its ability to either document the world or transform it into a new representation, Thierry Gourjon, a French born photographer with family ties to both Iceland and Norway, first studied medicine for two years, after getting his French Baccalaureat in Paris. Frustrated by the lack of creativity associated with the study of medicine he decided to go back to his early interest, photography. Having been self taught up to that point but wanting to further his understanding of its basic principles, he enrolled at the Societe Francaise de Photography and got his CAP de Photographie a year later. Soon after, he sent his portfolio to Pratt Institute (Brooklyn, NY,) where he was accepted early 1993. He graduated in 1996 with a B.FA. in Photography. Freelance photographer for the past 15 years he has been able to combine working as a commercial and documentary photographer as well as developing long term personal projects. He has also been teaching photography at Pratt Institute and LaGuardia CUNY for over ten years.

Equally at ease within the boundaries of traditional photography or conceptual work, visual communication is his primary interest, regardless of the genre.  Over the past few years, he has explored combining photography with the limitless possibilities of the digital medium, developing a new body of digital mixed media work.( I.e.: the "Sign Language" and "Fictional Universes" series).
